What's This 2/0 Thing All About?

So you may be asking yourself about the suture size numbering system. Like what is this 2/0 all about? 2/0 is called "two-ott" (phonetically) from the British pronunciation of zero as "aught". The United States Pharmacopeia classification system was established in 1937 for standardization and comparison of suture materials, corresponding to metric measures. The 3 classes of sutures are collagen, synthetic absorbable, and nonabsorbable. Size refers to the diameter of the suture strand and is denoted as zeroes. The more zeroes characterizing a suture size, the smaller the resultant strand diameter (eg, 4-0 is larger than 5-0)

Abstract: Synthetic absorbable sutures and other surgical devices are prepared from polymers of p-dioxanone and 1,4-dioxepan-2-one, and alkyl substituted derivatives thereof. Monofilament sutures of oriented fibers are characterized by good tensile and knot strength and a high level of flexibility and softness. The sutures have good in vivo strength retention and are slowly absorbed without significant tissue reaction.
