So you may be asking
yourself about the suture size numbering system. Like what
is this 2/0 all about? 2/0 is called "two-ott"
(phonetically) from the British pronunciation of zero as
"aught". Pronounced the same as "you aught to be in
pictures". Now you know how to speak like a suture
aficionado, and here comes the origin of that numbering
The United States Pharmacopeia classification system was
established in 1937 for standardization and comparison of
suture materials, corresponding to metric measures. The 3
classes of sutures are collagen, synthetic absorbable, and
nonabsorbable. Size refers to the diameter of the suture
strand and is denoted as zeroes. The more zeroes
characterizing a suture size, the smaller the resultant
strand diameter (eg, 4-0 is larger than 5-0)
Here's where it all
started. In the labs of Ethicon with Drs. Doddi, Versfelt
and Wasserman. These great men of science have passed on,
but their invention continues to live on. Below is the
original patent information.
